Buncers Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 When was the last time you had an India takeaway in the car - just a thought Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 OOOP'S! sounds like the heater matrix is leaking! the smell is most likely the anti freeze being boiled off! are you loosing coolant? it may be only a weep so you may not notice the loss? chuck a can of rad weld in and see if that helps? I had a car once that smelt like the gas they gave you at the dentist when you first clicked the heater on  it gave me nightmares for weeks before I ripped it all out and fixed the leak  Quote
Guest tdi Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 it isnt loosing any coolant someone said it might be a oil problem any ideas Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 Check for melting fusebox type problems, melting plastic and insulation can smell very odd. Quote
seatkid Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 Check your wife hasn't sublet the rear section to students. ;) Quote
Guest Turbo Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 Is it when you have the air con switched on? That can be a bit stinky! More like dead dog than Indian food. I won`t say anymore! Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 I would also check the brake master cylinder for leaks as when the brake fluid drips onto the exhaust the smell is awfull and I have had this on two of my cars, one being a 99 TDi Gal and a previous Siera ! . Quote
johnb80 Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 You should also remember that brake fluid is more likely to cause a fire when dripped on a hot exhaust than petrol or diesel! Regards - JB Quote
Guest tdi Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 it does it when the air con isnt on as well ;) Quote
seatkid Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 Check for damp carpet on the passenger side - if the usual culprit (rear washer pipe) has come undone and you're using some naff windscreen fluid (Halfords etc) - this can pong. Try a search for smelly air conditioning. A/C units can get full of smelly bateria - there are number of treatments for clearing this. A cheap way though is to use Dettol air freshener lots squirted directly into the ventilation system either through the pollen filter, or under the passenger side (when set to recirc). Another suspect is the pollen filter itself, if it hasnt been changed in the last 2 years/ 20,000 miles, consider it, they tend to get damp and smelly, you can get a carbon activated one which suposedly removes external smells. One of your mates might have peed in the back on the way back from the pub that night.... Quote
Guest tdi Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 took it to garage today but they couldnt find anything wrong no leaks nothing they said the smell was like antifreeze but wasnt so they not sure what else it could be said might be air con but i never use it :( Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 I think that it may be that it is the refrigerant leaking. I had exactly the same thing on my Scorpio, but only first thing in the morning. It did go off after a while and some long runs. I also had a similar problem with my last Granada Scorpio and that was definitely the refrigerant. Try the air con - it needs to be run on a regular basis to stop the seals going dry and leaking apparently. Quote
